July 21st: Emma Watson

In this series, 24 Women Who Change(d) the World, I will highlight women from various backgrounds, time periods, and areas of expertise that change(d) the world through their actions, talents, and choices. With 1 subject per day for 24 days, this series invites readers to think outside the box when it comes to their knowledge of historical figures–how many female historical figures can you name off of the top of your head? Let’s increase that count together.

Hellooooo, ladies and gents! We’re getting to the end of our series here and it has been so fun to learn about all of these outstanding women that have totally changed our world. Thanks for joining me! I bet you recognize today’s subject– you might only know her as Hermione or Belle, but is likely that you recognize her face at the very least. Here are her stats, but first, a question:

What is your Hogwarts house? I’m a Hufflepuff. Okay, moving on.

NAME: Emma Watson

BIRTHDATE: April 15th, 1990

OCCUPATION(S): Actress, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

Emma was 11 when she had her big screen debut in the first movie of the Harry Potter series (based on the works of another successful and admirable woman, J.K. Rowling) as one of the main trio, Hermione Granger. If you haven’t read the books, trust me– you need to! If nothing else, please watch the movies and admire Emma’s performance; she was so impressive at such a young age and only got better at her craft over time.

Emma began to branch out in her acting career as she took roles in various non-Potter films, such as The Tale of Despereaux. She also took on some modeling opportunities in her late teen years; she was the seasonal face for Burberry and did some work for Lancôme.

Emma landed several major roles back to back; she starred in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), The Bling Ring (2013), This is the End (2013), Noah (2014) & [my personal favorite] Beauty & the Beast (2017).

While she pursued her career and devoted herself to doing what she loved, Emma also made time for schooling; she graduated from Brown University with an English degree in 2014. She was also appointed to the position of UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in that same year.

I so admire the ways that Emma champions women’s rights all over the world– she is a fierce advocate for the He for She Campaign and has started several important dialogues about what it means to be feminist. Keep doing you, Emma! You’re killing it.

Until next time!
